The International Energy Agency recently reported more money will be invested in clean energy in 2025 than ever before—a record $2.2 trillion. It’s clearer than ever that the Clean Industrial Revolution is here. I can’t wait to see what this level of investment unlocks in the years ahead.
I've been working on energy innovation since 2008, because I believe it will help make lives better around the world. Developing new sources of clean energy allows us to both improve human welfare today and protect the planet for future generations. It powers economies, and it’s the only way we’ll meaningfully reduce emissions.
When everyone in the world has access to affordable, reliable, and abundant clean energy, the world will be healthier and more prosperous. Getting to that point will be difficult, but I’m optimistic we can get there.
Through Breakthrough Energy, I fund work on innovations that will help us make that transformation. Meeting the world’s climate and energy goals requires unprecedented investment from the private sector to drive innovation. It demands extraordinary collaboration across all sectors to get clean energy ideas out of the lab and into the market affordably and at scale. This work has been Breakthrough Energy's mission from day one.
I also fund work through the Gates Foundation to help people in the world’s poorest countries thrive in a time when the twin threats of poverty and disease are exacerbated by rising temperatures. The best way to help people adapt to climate change is to make sure they’re healthy and prosperous. Our partners are helping to improve baseline health, as well as working on things like new varieties of crops and livestock that can flourish in a warmer world.
