The Giving Pledge goes international
Over 100 billionaires are giving away the majority of their wealth.
When Warren Buffett, Melinda and I launched the Giving Pledge in 2010, we had no idea whether anyone would join us in the pledge, but in less than three years more than 100 individuals and couples have signed on. In effect, they have vowed to give away what could amount to billions of dollars to help make the world a better place.
And then something else happened that we didn’t expect. People outside the United States expressed interest in joining in the Giving Pledge, too.
Today, we’re announcing that 12 individuals and couples from outside the U.S. have taken the pledge, bringing the worldwide total to 105 signatories in 9 countries across five continents.
One of my favorite things about the pledge is how much we can learn from each other. So I’m excited that our conversations will now include the perspectives of philanthropists from Asia and Africa, areas with some of the worst poverty and greatest needs.
