Profile: The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria


Since its creation in 2002, the Global Fund has been a major engine driving remarkable progress in the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria. Global Fund-supported programs have saved lives by providing AIDS treatment for 3.3 million people and by distributing 230 million insecticide-treated bed nets for the prevention of malaria worldwide. The Global Fund has so far approved $22.6 billion for more than 1,000 grants in 150 countries.

Results Fighting AIDS

  • 190 million HIV counseling and testing sessions conducted
  • 3.3 million people are receiving antiretroviral treatment
  • 5.8 million basic care and support services provided to orphans and vulnerable children
  • 1.3 million HIV-positive pregnant women received PMTCT treatment (prevention from mother to child treatment)

Results Fighting Tuberculosis

  • 8.6 million new cases of infectious tuberculosis detected and treated
  • 48 percent of the 2009 estimated international targets for detection of TB cases and treatment using DOTS were contributed by Global Fund-supported programs

Results Fighting Malaria

  • 230 million insecticide-treated nets were distributed to protect families from malaria transmission
  • 230 million malaria drug treatments were delivered
